Korea Research Institute of Ships &
Ocean Engineering (KRISO)
Since 1973, our research institute has contributed to advancing Korea’s shipbuilding and maritime industry into one of the world’s leading businesses through dedicated research and development in the field of ships and ocean engineering for 50 years.
We continue to conduct our research for the development of existing key domestic industries as we scout innovative technology and conduct proactive R&D to support emerging shipbuilding and maritime industries in line with the recent transition towards carbon neutrality and digitalization.

The mission of our institute includes the following:
  • Increase the competitiveness of key domestic industries through the development of environmentally friendly and highly efficient ship technologies
  • Develop future offshore plant technology to provide the driving force for innovation in the maritime sector
  • Lead Ocean New Deal project in the maritime sector through digital convergence
  • Improve maritime safety and environment through developing maritime accident prevention and response technologies.

  • Based on our mission, we aim to advance international competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding and marine industry further and take the lead in securing public technology to achieve a safer and cleaner marine environment.

We will continue our effort to develop into a global maritime power by creating a new driving force in the shipbuilding and maritime industry and by leading technological innovation in the maritime sector.
Korea Maritime Institute (KMI)
The Korea Maritime Institute(KMI) was established under the Prime Minister’s Office as a government-funded research institute affiliated with the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Our mission is to contribute to the development of national maritime and fisheries policies and the advancement of the national economy. Since its inception in 1984, KMI has grown into a national policy research institute that conducts comprehensive and systematic research on all maritime-related fields, including oceans, fisheries, shipping, maritime affairs, ports, international logistics, and fishing communities.

The ocean plays a crucial role in maintaining the Earth’s ecosystem, providing abundant resources including seafood, and serving as a critical conduit for global trade. In recent years, its significance has been growing amid climate change, the rapidly shifting international economic and security order, and the acceleration of technological innovation. At a time when the ocean is emerging as a core asset for national development, it is imperative to accurately understand the value of the ocean, the challenges we face, and the changes in both domestic and global environments surrounding maritime affairs. Based on this understanding, it is KMI’s mission to set strategic goals and develop concrete action plans. In this era of great transformation, we will contribute to Korea’s leap forward as a global maritime powerhouse by resolving pressing maritime and fisheries issues, generating new growth engines through the blue economy, supporting livelihoods and economic recovery, and proactively responding to national maritime and fisheries challenges.
